UDHAMPUR, Oct 10: On the 68th Raising Day, Lt Gen D Anbu, Northern Army Commander complimented all members of the TA fraternity for their devotion to duty and indomitable spirit while working under trying and difficult conditions.
He acknowledged their tremendous contribution in maintaining the sanctity of Nation’s borders and fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. He also exhorted them to uphold the high traditions of Northern Command in all future endeavours.
The Territorial Army (TA) also known as the Citizens’ Army, celebrates its Raising Day on October 9 every year. It was on this day in 1949, under the first Governor General, Rajago-palachari that the TA was raised. It was conceived as an opportunity for civilians to serve in uniform, fulfilling a desire of many to become ‘citizen-soldiers’.
The TA has evolved over the years, enhancing its role to include ecological tasks and very recently in ‘National Mission Clean Ganga’. In Jammu & Kashmir, numerous youths have joined the TA. Operationally, the TA units of J&K have contributed in providing safe and secure environment for local civilians in areas where they are deployed.
