JAMMU, Feb 11: National symposium on policy planning for livelihood security through domestic animal biodiversity 2016 was held at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, SKUAST-Jammu, R S Pura by Society for Conservation of Domestic Animal Biodiversity (SOCD-AB), Karnal.
About 200 delegates from all parts of the country attended the symposium. Chief guest, Vice Chancellor, Prof Pradeep K Sharma inaugurated the symposium.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sharma opined that the policy planning for maintaining and conserving domestic animal biodiversity is the need of the day and scientists should deliberate the various aspects pertaining to livelihood security through domestic animal biodiversity. He further said that livelihood security of resourceless poor farmers, especially of hill mountain agro-ecosystems is a serious issue.
The VC further stressed that livestock, poultry and fishing are important components of livelihood security and economic sustenance of marginal, landless and migratory farmers. He assured that the symposium will provide an appropriate platform to highlight such points.
Dean Faculty Prof M M S Zama hoped that the scientists will come out with various alternatives about the conservation of biodiversity and livelihood security through policy planning. He was of the view that young scientists from all over the country would be benefitted from their involvement in the various technical sessions.
President of the Society, Dr Arjava Sharma, revealed that India has 151 registered breeds of livestock and poultry, which immensely contribute in securing livelihood of rural masses. Dr RK Tagger, organising secretary, presented the vote of thanks.
Director Extension, Dr K S Risam, Director Education, Dr TAS Ganai, Director Research, Dr J P Sharma, Registrar, B B Gupta and university governance were also present on this occasion along with delegates and faculty.
