Ranjit Sagar Dam

Sir,
It cannot be denied that when we take up developmental projects in hand, we must take care of the environment. The tragedy that struck Uttrakhand this year could have been avoided had the authorities both at state and central levels shown concern for environment protection. Committee on Environment during its visit to Ranjit Sagar Dam has voiced concern over the environmental damage.
Besides, the state has suffered losses on account of sharing water and electricity only because of improper implementation of the project. The periodic situation and the status have not been   reviewed with the Government of Punjab.
It is shocking that while implementing the project, thousands of lush green trees have been felled . In addition to this, valuable three lac forest trees too have been axed. This is likely to cause extensive long run damage to the environment and the government seems to have adopted silence and inactive approach towards this matter. The sufferings of the villagers have not been duly taken care of in terms of compensation and employment. The government needs to look into this problem at an early date.
Yours etc…
