JAMMU, May 23: J&K Government led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can play a drastic role in changing the fate of the younger generation in the State by imposing ban on sale of liquor in Jammu and Kashmir.
This was stated by a social activist Ranjit Singh while interacting with media persons here today.
He stated that when the States like Gujarat and Bihar can ban liquor then why not Jammu and Kashmir, adding that liquor menace has destroyed several families economically as well as socially.
Singh cited several examples regarding evil effects of liquor menace and hinted that being hilly State, many people have lost their lives due to liquor intake.
By imposing ban on liquor, thousands of lives could be saved very year, he said, adding that major number of accidents occur due to liquor consumption by people. Most of the accidents took place during intake of liquor during functions including marriages, he added.
There are numerous shops next to the temples and one vendor is having dozens of shops on his name, Singh said and urged the Government to form a committee to look into the issue so that the facts and figures could be made public for vital information.
Singh informed that there is also a menace of making low standard liquor, which should be checked and anything wrong should be corrected.
He said that the shops along with highways are not closed yet in Jammu and Kashmir while as across the country, the wine shops and bars have been closed.
If the Government failed to impose ban on the sale of liquor in Jammu and Kashmir, an agitation on the pattern of Uttar Pradesh will be launched in the State in the time to come, he added.
