JAMMU, Dec 14: Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone today called for launching awareness campaign to educate people about the conservation of energy. He said students are a resource who can play a pivotal role in educating people about the conservation of energy.
The Minister was speaking at a function held in connection with celebration of Energy Conservation Week, organized by Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET) Chak Bhalwal Jammu in collaboration with NSS Unit, GCET, here today.
The Minister said “it is our primary duty to save the water bodies, forests and other resources required for generation of energy”. He said water bodies are shrinking day by day so conservation of the water bodies of the State is essential to save the energy.
Mr Lone said that holding of such events will provide a platform for exchange of ideas between students community and experts about the benefits of energy conservation. He said efficient use of energy has become imperative in view of the energy crises across the world.
Commissioner Secretary, Science and Technology Bipul Pathak, Secretary, Higher Education Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, Joint Managing Director, Chenab Valley Power Project, Manzoor Ahmad Salroo and K R Suri, GM PGCIL also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the values of energy and importance of celebrating of energy conservation week.
In her welcome address, Principal of the College, Dr Sameru Sharma highlighted the aim of the event. She congratulated the students, who spread the message of energy conservation by participating in the poster making and slogan writing competition in junior and senior categories.
She said that everyone has a role to play in energy conservation and campaign in this regard should not be confined to a week only. “We need to involve more students, who are the key players in deciding the future energy technologies and solutions to safe guard the environment”, Dr Sameru added. She further said that GCET organized competitions in various schools on the subject in which more than 2000 students participated.
Later, the Minister distributed prizes and certificates among the participant students.
In poster making (Junior Category), Pragun Sharma, Class 4th student of KV No.1 Jammu bagged first prize while as Satuti of Class 5th KV No.1 and Isha Devi of Class 4th of KV No.1 Jammu bagged second and third prize respectively.
In poster making (Senior Category), Qariya, Mrigakshi and Vinny of Class 10th of KC International School bagged first prize and Sukriti Gupta of 9th Class of DPS and Simran of 8th Class of Presentation Convent bagged second and third prize respectively. Nitendrana, 7th Class student of KV No.2 bagged the consolation prize.
In slogan writing (Junior Category), slogan of Devesh Gupta, Class 5th student of KV No.1 Jammu was selected as best while as in Senior Category, slogan of Sukriti Gupta, 9th class student of DPS was adjudged as best.
Earlier, the Minister laid foundation stone of SC/ST Girls Hostel to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.5.42 crore in GCET Complex at Chak Bhalwal Jammu.
Later, the Minister inspected Boys Hostel of the College and interacted with the students and enquired about the facilities being made available to them.
The Minister also directed the concerned to prepare Detailed Project Report for installation of  Solar System in the college so that the funds could be arranged for the purpose. He also directed the JKPCC to prepare a project for construction of three room set residential quarter for Warden of the Hostel.
Employees of the college also met the Minister and apprised him about their problems included release of 6th pay commission areas and amendment in recruitment rules. The Minister gave them patient hearing and assured that there genuine demands would be looked into.
