Sham for active involvement of PRIs in sanitation, water conservation campaign

JAMMU, Dec 14: The Communication & Capacity Development Unit (CCDU), a constituent of PHE Department today organized one-day divisional level mega workshop-cum-training programme on water and sanitation at Auditorium of IIIM, here today.
Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma, who was chief guest on the occasion, inaugurated the workshop by lighting the traditional lamp.
Commissioner/Secretary, PHE, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, A.K. Sahu, Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, Jatinder Kumar Singh, Chief Engineer, PHE, K.K. Gupta, Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sushil Aima, Executive Director, CCDU, Bharti Vaid, State Coordinator, Dr. Narinder Butyal, CMOs, BMOs, head of several educational institutions, engineers, Sarpanchs, Panchs and officers of various departments, Anganwari Workers, ASHA workers from across the Jammu division were present on the occasion.
The aim and objective of the workshop was to highlight the importance of water and sanitation in the day to day life and to create general awareness among the Sarpanchs, Panchs and other stakeholders of the society.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that role of the PRIs will be made more vibrant in the campaign of conservation and usages of water and sanitation across the State. He said PRIs are the vital and basic instruments that can contribute and make the campaign result oriented as they are associated at the ground-level affairs and closely linked with the rural population. He asked the elected representatives to play their positive role with missionary efforts to achieve the objective of ensuring safe drinking water and proper sanitation in the rural and far-flung areas.
The Minister said that Government’s main thrust is to conserve water resources and ensure judicious use of water and this can only be possible with the active support of various stakeholders, like education institutions, NGOs and above all PRIs which have direct contact with the people.
He said the Government has set up an exclusive body namely, CCDU with handsome funding at its disposal to deal with the issue and this organization will make relentless efforts to educate the masses at different level to achieve the objective of this noble cause. He stressed the need for close coordination between various departments to push up the campaign at the grass root level to achieve better results.
In his key address, Dr. Pawan Kotwal said that under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) there is main thrust to provide safe drinking water to the rural and far-flung areas. Under this component the CCDU has been mandated to generate awareness amongst the masses about the water usages and sanitation with the active involvement of PRIs and other departments.
He said the Department has made the role of PRIs more important and Sarpanchs have been made head of the VWSCs, who will conduct regular water testing with the help of kits provided by the CCDU. The VWSCs will be duly trained by the CCDU functionaries at the district, tehsil and block level. This campaign will help in providing safe drinking water to the masses.
Mrs Bharti Vaid in her welcome address highlighted the aim and objective of the workshop and functioning of the CCDU. She sought cooperation from various stakeholders of the society to achieve the objective.
