LEH, Feb 17: The Chairman/CEC LAHDC Leh has urged  the Union Minister of State (I/C) Telecommunication, Ministry of Communication, GOI, to take up the issue of the  grave crisis being faced by the people of Ladakh because of snapping of BSNL Optical Fibre cable and thus pushing the whole region into digital darkness.
In this regard, the CEC has forwarded a DO to  Manoj Sinha,  Union Minister of State (I/C) for Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications GOI.
“For the last many years we have been imploring with the highest authority to address the issue as a strategically significant and developmentally forlorn region cannot be digitally starved,” wrote the Chairman while apprising that for the last 20 days a cloud of misfortune in the form of digital exclusion has blanketed over the entire region leading to untold inconvenience to people especially earning livelihood through business, tourism etc. Moreover, Government agencies as well as thousands of beneficiaries of welfare schemes are directly affected. As informed, this misery will continue till the month of May, 2017, when only after opening of Srinagar-Leh Highway the repair of the ailing OFC can be taken up, he added.
Chairman strongly emphasized that keeping Ladakh Digitally excluded for another two months will certainly kill Ladakh’s tourism prospects for the coming season along with severe financial affect on developmental front and complete halt on important tendering processes of various Government executing agencies.
Chairman resolutely asked for immediate intervention from the highest quarters of Telecommunication Ministry and asked for making available VSET hardware through BSNL on priority to be operated for the use of public and Government agencies in Leh and various sub divisions of the District as an interim measure and also implored for an immediate and effective intervention from the highest authority for finding a permanent solution to this issue of internet connectivity in Ladakh region.
