9,000 youth trained under Northeast Livelihood Project: Dr Jitendra

NEW DELHI, Feb 7: 9,000 youth have been trained under the Northeast Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) introduced by the Ministry for the Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER).
Stating this in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh elaborated that under the NERLP of the Ministry of DoNER, 9,000 youth and Self Help Groups (SHGs) have been provided vocational training so far. Out of these, 4600 youth have got job placements, while 2000 youth are self-employed, mostly in the pursuits of traditional products.
In addition to this, the reply also stated that the North-Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi)  has, during the last three years of the Modi Government, provided capacity building support to 5178 beneficiaries, while 1932 beneficiaries were provided assistance for marketing of their handloom and handicraft products under the Corporation’s CSR initiatives.
Referring to the role of the Ministry of Skill Development, Dr Jitendra Singh stated that National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is implementing capacity building scheme for the Ministry of Northeast. The scheme aims to provide funding for skill development, enhancing of employability and promotion of self-employment. For this purpose, Rs.25 crore were sanctioned to Ministry of Skill Development for carrying out the training of approximately 8153 candidates by the end of March 2018.
At the same time, the North Eastern Community Resource Management Project (NERCORMP) has reached out to as many as 89,449 households in 2,041 villages across 10 districts, as on 1st of January this year.
Overall, as per the reply by the DoNER Minister, the focus is on creating self-employment capacity and employability. In order to achieve this objective, the Ministry prefers to generate livelihood with preference on traditional handloom and handicraft skills. At the same time, awareness about marketing of the products associated with traditional crafts is also carried out.
