SRINAGAR: Traffic on the 434-km-long national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir and the historic Mughal road was resumed after remaining closed for traffic due to early morning snow on Wednesday.
However, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic despite rain since early this morning.
Traffic on 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in South Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was suspended due to snowfall at Peer-ki-Gali and other places early morning. There was also landslides due to snowfall. However, the landslide was removed and traffic was allowed this afternoon.
A traffic police official said that traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway was suspended on Wednesday morning following snowfall at Zojilla pass. The road had become slippery due to snowfall, he said. However, as due to improvement in the weather, the snow had melted and road become operational.
”We are allowing one way traffic from Ladakh to Kashmir from very early in the morning and later from here to Leh in the afternoon everyday to avoid any accident or traffic jam on Zojila, he said. However, today traffic was allowed after remaining suspended for several hours. We allowed vehicles from Drass (Ladakh) to Sonamarg (Kashmir),” he said.
Later in the day, vehicles will be allowed from here to other side of the Zojila pass.
Meanwhile, a traffic official said traffic on the highway, linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was plying despite rain.
However, heavy vehicles will continue to ply from one side only while light vehicles will operate from both sides.
Today heavy vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu, he said, adding that the vehicles have to pass Jawahar tunnel before 1000 hrs. Light vehicles will ply from both sides, he added. (AGENCIES)
