SRINAGAR, Apr 27: Prof Nazeer Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST- Kashmir, emphasized on researchers of the university to focus research on doubling productivity of different crops and develop region specific varieties and technologies for farmers income generation.
He was speaking during two- day 53rd Research Council meeting of SKUAST-Kashmir, which was held at SKUAST Kashmir and concluded today at Shalimar Campus, Srinagar. The meeting discussed, deliberated and reviewed various research programmes currently going on in the University besides formulated new research programmes.
Vice-Chancellor advised the researchers to aim farmer centric research and lay special focus on year round cultivation of vegetables, removal of farm drudgery, post-harvest and value addition of the commodities to generate more income and employment opportunities in the State. He also announced that university is launching Certificate courses in Lan-dscape Architecture, Canopy Management, Food Processing and Poultry rearing in different Faculties soon.
Prof M Y Zargar, Director Research, elaborated the research achievements of the University and informed that 12 new varieties in Rice, Maize, Vegetables, Oilseeds and Fodder Oats have been released to meet the food and fodder requirement of the State.
The Council was informed that the University submitted 94 research projects to different funding agencies, out of which 15 projects have been sanctioned with financial allocation of more than Rs 10 crores.
The Council also took review of different technologies developed by the university in saffron, preparation of Digital soil health maps of most parts of the valley and Ladakh region, capability of undertaking quality and residue analysis of pesticides at Quality Control Laboratory, method validated for the Residue Analysis of Horticultural Mineral Oils and value addition of different products and providing livelihood and nutritional security to tribal poor through new technologies, varieties with the help of ICAR under Tribal Sub Plan.
On the occasion, Vice-Chancellor also released the manual on “Greenhouse technologies for Kashmir and Ladakh regions”. The participants in the meeting were Directors, Deans of the University, Heads of the Divisions and Heads of Development Departments. Members significantly contributed in the deliberation and gave their valuable suggestions.
