Punjab based smugglers detained, 50 tolas gold recovered

JAMMU, May 9: Police today detained three Punjab based smugglers along with around 50 tolas gold from Indira Chowk, falling under the jurisdiction of Bus-Stand police station.
Police spokesman said that, on specific inputs about gold smuggling from the neighbouring Punjab State, police party from Bus-Stand police station led by SHO Satvinder Singh laid a naka at Indira chowk under the supervision of SDPO City Kulbir Handa and SP City JS Johar and intercepted a i20 car bearing registration number PB02BQ-9564.
During checking, police recovered 50 tolas of gold from the vehicle, which was being smuggled from Punjab to Jammu after exempting tax, he added.
The three smugglers identified as Gurmeet Singh and his brother Mandeep Singh, son of Harjinder Singh of Antaryami Colony, Amritsar, Punjab and Gurmeet Singh, son of Baj Singh of Tarn Taran, Amritsar were detained on the spot, he said.
During investigation, it was ascertained that the detained persons used to smuggle gold after getting tax exemption from Punjab to Jammu in the form of ornaments and used to sell it to local jewellers in the city and outskirts areas of the Jammu region, he added.
The detained persons, gold worth Rs 11 lakh and the vehicle were handed over to the State Sales Tax Department for further investigation, he added.
