Police arrest acid thrower

SRINAGAR, Apr 5: A special police team today arrested a youth who attacked a girl with acid yesterday at Kralgund area of frontier Kupwara district of north Kashmir after she rejected his marriage proposal.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Handwara Ghulam Jeelani told a press conference that a special team headed by Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shabir Ahmad Khan arrested the main acused Ajaz Ahmad Dar (29) this morning. He said that his accomplice Abbas Najar, who works at a chemical lab, was already arrested by police yesterday.
On Tuesday, a 25-year old girl hailing from Palpora village of Qaziabad in Handwara was attacked by Ajaz at her home after she rejected his marriage proposal. The police said that the youth was for long following the girl and wanted to marry her but she rejected. The girl was supposed to get engaged next Sunday with another youth of her and her parents’ choice.
The SSP said that a case under FIR with number 14 of 2017 under section 307 is already registered regarding and to uncover and for deep investigation of the incident, he has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which will be headed by SDPO Handwara.
He said there will be thorough investigation and speedy prosecution in this case and within short span of time the case will be presented before court of law. “There will be stern punishment in accordance with law against the culprits,” the SSP added.
