People protest at Marheen, demand release of youth

KATHUA, Dec 2: Hundreds of people from Banyari and other surrounding villages assembled at Ram Lila Ground in front of Tehsil office Marheen in Hiranagar Sector  today and protested against the arrest of two youth by the police who had participated in the demonstration and NH blockade two days back against the attack on Sarpanch of Banyari.
The protesters were led by MLA Hiranagar Kuldeep Raj and district president, BJP Kathua Prem Nath Dogra. The leaders of other political parties including former Minister and senior Congress leader, Manjit Singh also joined the protest.
They demanded that the State land in the area be demarcated and illegal possession be vacated immediately. Besides, the earlier status co of the land be restored and two persons arrested be immediately released.
They also demanded that Makhan Din who is a bovine smuggler and against whom cases have already been registered and who along with some goons attacked the Sarpanch and inflicted grievous injuries on his person be slapped PSA. They said that some elements are trying to disturb the age old brotherhood in the area on the behest of certain forces.
The protesters also alleged that some suspicious movements were seen in the belt in past many times and the vigil in the area be intensified to identify such elements.
They accused the Government of lathicharging the people who were on peaceful protest and alleged that the culprits responsible for attacking sarpanch were at large for two days.
They said that the unidentified elements are trying to create unrest in the area and they be identified so that peace prevails in future too.
They said in past also some suspicious elements were seen but after the searches were made they mingled with people. Being a sensitive area and close to border the Government should maintain constant vigil, they added.
