JAMMU, June 29: Alleging huge shortage of drinking water, residents of New Plot and Amphalla under the umbrella of Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM) today held a protest at New Plot.
Carrying empty buckets in their hands, men and women raised slogans against the PHE Department. They alleged that the whole West constituency is reeling with severe water shortage for last many days due to ongoing work pipes laying project by ERA. They said that water is supplied only for 10 to 15 minutes that too once in a week.
Addressing the protester, JWAM president, Sunil Dimple, said that the people of Jammu city are facing huge scarcity of drinking water but the BJP MLAs even did not bother to raise the issue in State Assembly.
Further alleging that River Tawi has failed to meet the drinking water requirement of the Jammu city, he said the problem cannot be solved unless the Government starts the work on the Chenab Water Supply from Akhnoor.
He said for last 25 years, the file of Chenab Water Supply Project is gathering dust in the offices. “All successive State Governments made commitments on the project, which is finally lying in cold storage”, Dimple added.
Dimple criticized BJP-PDP Government for selling the drinking water to the people of Jammu by installing the meters on water connections. He demanded that water should be provided “totally free of cost” to the people and there should be “No charges and No Rent” on water supply.
He also appealed the Chief Engineer, PHE, Sushil Aima to rush the tanker service to the affected localities and also ask the ERA to accelerate the pace of the work of pipes laying work.
