Night temps plummet as WD eludes region

Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Nov 28: The night temperatures across Kashmir today plummeted as the Western Disturbance eluded the region and Meteorological Department has forecast that temperatures across Kashmir would further plummet. A MeT department official said that a fresh WD, which originated in the Arabian Sea, had entered the region but didn't exactly hit the State.

A MeT department official said that a fresh WD, which originated in the Arabian Sea, had entered the region but didn't exactly hit the State. "Light rain or snow could occur at isolated places in the Valley in the evening on Tuesday," he said. However, he said from Wednesday onwards the sky will be clear, which could result in further dip in the night temperature. The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam in South Kashmir, further dipped and settled at minus 3.9 degree, against minus 3.1 degree Celsius recorded yesterday. The night temperature was 2 degree below normal. However, the day temperature was 11.1 degree Celsius. Gulmarg in North Kashmir, also witnessed a dip of about 2 degrees from yesterday in the night temperature, which settled at minus 3.4 degree Celsius. The night temperature at Srinagar was minus 1.9 degree which dropped further from previous night's 0.4 degree Celsius. The day temperature settled at 11.2 degree Celsius which is one degree below normal. The mercury at Qazigund, Kupwara in North Kashmir and Kokernag also dipped and settled at minus 2.2 degree Celsius, minus 2.1 degree Celsius and minus 1.4 degree Celsius, respectively. However, day temperatures of these places settled at 12.0 degree Celsius, 12.3 degree Celsius and 11.4 degree Celsius respectively. Leh and Kargil were the only two places in the region which witnessed improvement in the night temperature due to cloudy skies though they were still below freezing point. Even though there was an improvement of about a degree in the night temperature from yesterday at Leh in Ladakh region, it was still the coldest place in the region at minus 7.3 degree Celsius. The day temperature, however, settled at 5.4 degree Celsius. The mercury at Kargil witnessed an improvement of 4 degrees from yesterday and settled at minus 6.4 degree Celsius, still the second coldest place in the region. The day temperature of the place settled at 6.3 degrees Celsius.
