KATHUA, Nov 19: The tall claims of Government regarding mother – child care have proved hollow as the District Hospital Kathua management failed to manage safe delivery of a woman and caused death of newly born soon after she took birth.
The matter took place late last night when a new born baby died of allegedly negligence of district Hospital Kathua after a non professional nurse was lonely attending the whole delivery in labour room of Hospital .

The family members of pregnant woman identified as Aarti w/o Balbir Chand r/o Giar , Marheen admitted in District Hospital Kathua last evening due to severe delivery pain. She was in severe pain and no doctor attended her. Ultimately a nurse on duty attended the patient as an emergency case and took her to labour room lonely. The woman delivered the baby in complicated condition as the nurse was not so professional to handle such serious cases of delivery. The baby’s heart was beating but pulse was not in proper way. The baby was sent to Natal Care Unit but it was too late to that it could survive. The family members in anger accused the hospital management for the death of the baby. As it was first delivery of woman and created complicacy during delivery time. The family member said that the district hospital is only for name as there is nothing on the ground and instead of doctors, nurses are attending the delivery cases that caused death to the patient. They demanded inquiry into the matter and serious action against the erring hospital staff on duty.
The Incharge Superintendent District hospital Hospital Kathua, Dr Anil Kumar said that the Gynecologist was attending another case of delivery in operation theatre. As Gynecologist was preoccupied with operation of another woman, nurse failed to handle the case . He said explanation was issued to nurse and other staff on duty and action will be taken against the erring staff after verification. He admitted that the heart of baby was working but pulse was not and baby was immediately admitted in Natal Care Unit but did not recover. It is mentioned here that negligence in delivery cases are common in hospital due to shortage of doctors and assistant surgeons.
A pregnant woman died few months back during the delivery in labour room and family members blocked Highway and demand inquiry into matter. Most of the delivery patients are being referred to SMGS Hospital Jammu in critical condition.
