LONDON, Apr 15: A new comedy show ‘Three Shades of Brown’, based on the lives of three British Asian flatmates in London, was recently premiered here.
‘Three Shades of Brown’ has been written and directed by Shai Hussain, who has a number of BBC radio plays to his credit.
Reminiscent of the popular US comedy ‘The Big Bang Theory’, the new web show was born out of an urge to reflect the lives of young Indian and Pakistani origin men in Britain which have not yet made their way into mainstream television.
“The web series idea was more down to desperation to get these voices out there. There is an under-representation of ethnic minority lives on mainstream television and I decided I should take the most affordable of my many ideas to the web, which is the place to go now,” said Hussain, who also moonlights as Bollywood DJ ‘Shai Guy’ at the regular Bombay Funkadelic nights in London.
“He was a dream to work with as he knew exactly what he was making and was completely clear about the characters,” said actor Omar Khan, who plays an uptight lawyer in the series.
‘Three Shades of Brown’ will be aired weekly every Monday and can be accessed anywhere in the world. It will include subtitles for worldwide audiences to navigate the complex British accents.
It is backed by British Web Series, which is hopeful it will have a similar trajectory to a number of its other web series that eventually got picked up by television.
It has also been chosen as part of the line-up of the New York Indian Film Festival 2014 early next month. (PTI)
