JAMMU, Mar 20: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu , in collaboration with ICSSR , North -West Regional Centre, Chandigarh, is organizing a two day national seminar on “Women’s Studies: Theories and Practice with Special Reference to Jammu Region”, which began today.
In his presidential remarks, Prof R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, JU, emphasized how women in Jammu have been making great strides in all walks of life, particularly in the domain of academic. He pointed out that the present seminar in which academicians, eminent researchers, scholars & students from across the country has been drawn to a single platform is a great opportunity for the young scholars to hone their skill and update their knowledge.
Prof Indu Agnihotri, Director, CWDS, New Delhi, delivered the key note address in which she touched upon the evolution of the women studies. She said the notion that the women studies in India are largely informed by theories and concepts of the West was not correct. She cited several examples in the context to illustrating how women studies in India is rooted in Indian context and it is the varied local experiences which have informed women studies in India. She strongly argued for pluralities of methods and research in women studies.
Earlier in her address, Prof Suman Jamwal, the Director of the Centre for Women Studies, pointed out how the Centre has contributed to the generation and dissemination of ideas and concepts which have significant bearing on the social perception, representation and construction of women.
A brief on the seminar was delivered by Dr Shyam Narayan Lal, the Convener of the seminar. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Priyanka Katoch and the program was conducted by Saranjit Kaur.
The first academic session was chaired by Prof Indu Agnihotri in which about eight papers touching upon different aspects of women and gender were presented.
In the post lunch session, three academic sessions were held , in which six papers relating to the theme of media, sexuality and women exploitation were read.
This was followed by two parallel sessions, one chaired by Dr Hafiza Muzaffar and another by Prof Sarvani Gooptu.
The second academic session was also attended by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh and his wife Mamta Singh.
