JAMMU, Nov 29: In the much publicized Sanjay Kumar alias Bakra murder case, Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Vinod Chatterji Koul today awarded life imprisonment to four convicts.
While awarding sentence, Principal Sessions Judge observed, “in view of the settled law, the underlying principle in sentencing is that showing undue sympathy in favour of the convicts as compared to the societal interests, is not desirable and that the appropriate sentence, commensurate to the gravity of the act of offence, should be imposed, which may also serve as a deterrence”.
“The murder has taken place due to inter gang rivalry and there is nothing on record to term this murder a case to fall within the definition of rarest of rarest case to warrant capital punishment”, the court said.
Accordingly, convicts Rajesh Dogra alias Mohan Cheer, Vishal Singh alias Billi Thaker, Naresh Singh and Deepak Kumar were awarded life imprisonment.
Special Public Prosecutor appeared for the State whereas Senior Advocate Sunil Sethi with Advocate Vishal Mahajan and Advocate Prince Khanna appeared for the accused persons.
