Srinagar, Sept 1: The Kashmir Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) today accused State Commercial Tax Department of harassing traders on the pretext of stock assessment.
In its Executive Committee meeting held today, the KCCI said the “unrest” caused to the business community by the State Commercial Tax Department with surprise raiding of their establishments in the valley on the pretext of stock assessment and inflicting heavy fines on the traders was discussed in detail.
“While the meeting appreciated the general traders for their willingness to corporate in stock assessment process by the department, it was felt that the way the raids are made is unplausible and amount to harassment and derailing the business activity of the valley which is still in the convalescent state after having suffered enormously in the floods September 2014,” the Joint Secretary of KCCI, Faiz Bakshi said in a statement.
“The KCCI therefore vehemently demand and request the Commercial Tax Department to have the wild raiding of shops and establishment stopped forthwith. At the same time the Chamber would like to forewarn the authorities that levying hefty penalties on flimsy grounds mainly for non displaying the certificates etc without giving a chance to be heard tantamount to driving the traders to wall.
