Kathua canal stinking

Excelsior Correspondent
KATHUA, Mar 13: Kathua canal known as life line of the Kathua town and other adjoining areas connected with this canal is presently stinking. The position of the canal during the winter closure time i.e. December to April is in very bad condition as it becomes a garbage dump during this period as entire garbage is dumped there.
This canal is hardly situated 100 meters away from the District Administration Office Kathua. The most of the population of the Kathua Ward Nos. 1, 3, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 including Housing Colony is adjoining with this canal.
According to the people of the area due to lack of dustbins and awareness among the inhabitants of these wards as well as commercial, biomedical, wastes are thrown in the canal regularly. There is no preventive measure from the Irrigation and Municipal authorities and the canal has been converted into the garbage reservoir.
The District administration Kathua and concerned Department and civil society as well as public in general should take measures to keep the canal clean. Some people have also diverted their gutter pipes, different wastages into the canal. Recently residents of the Ward nos. 1, 3, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 including Housing Colony questioned the functioning of the administration and concerned authority which failed to keep the canal clean.
