Karbalaie seeks Azad’s help to ease Zanskar river disaster

NEW DELHI, Feb 18:  Chairman,  Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil & MLA (Elect),   Asgar Ali Karbalaie  today called on Leader of Opposition, Ghulam Nabi Azad to apprise him about the situation created due to the formation of artificial lake caused by the landslide in the Phuktal river of Zanskar.
Mr Karbalaie apprised Azad about the looming threat due to this natural disaster which has caused  threat to the lives and properties of the people living downstream in the catchment area of river Phuktal.  He requested him to use his good offices to persuade the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for undertaking immediate mitigation measures to safeguard  the lives of the threatened populace.
Ghulam Nabi Azad immediately took up the matter with Secretary, NDMA, RK Jain and called for a serious intervention to save the entire Zanskar Valley and its inhabitants from an impending disaster.  Azad also drew attention of RK  Jain towards the threat that is posed to Nimo-Bazgo Hydel Power Project by the massive lake created by the landslide.
Secretary, NDMA  assured  Mr Azad that the operation to drain out the water pounded in the artificial lake will be commenced within a week’s time and all steps required will be taken to safeguard the lives and properties of the people.
