Excelsior has learnt with grief and sorrow the demise of a veteran legal luminary, the son of the soil, Justice Adarsh Sein Anand at the age of 81 owing to cardiac arrest at Noida. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Cremation will take place at Lodhi Road Cremation ground on December 3.
Justice Anand has had a distinguished legal career. He did LLB with first class and Diploma in Labour Laws from Lucknow University and Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Laws (Constitutional Law of the Commonwealth) from London University in 1963. He practiced Law in Punjab & Haryana High Court at Chandigarh. Starting his career as Additional Judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice Anand inched upwards and ultimately was raised as the Chief Justice of India, the most prestigious legal position in the year 1998 from which he retired in 2001.
Justice Anand was reputed for his honesty and legal acumen. He brought honour to the State by becoming the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. His main contribution was in the field of establishing Lok Adalats as a highly commendable act that would reduce the huge litigation and pendency in country’s courts. Besides his excellent professional expertise, Justice Anand was a scholar in his own right with fairly deep insight into the current history of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The people of Jammu have reason to be proud of an eminent jurist like Justice Anand. All top dignitaries in the country have expressed sympathy to the bereaved family. Daily Excelsior joins all those friends and well wishers who have mourned the death of a proud son of the soil. We would suggest that the University of Jammu should open a Chair in the Department of Law in the name of Justice Adarsh Sein Anand to commemorate his contribution towards the legal service of the country.
