Judging ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’ more difficult than directing films: Omung

NEW DELHI: Filmmaker Omung Kumar, who is all set to judge Zee TV’s ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’, says the kids on the show are so talented that judging them is more difficult than directing a movie.
Talking exclusively, Omung said, “judging a show is more difficult than directing a movie. Because there are kids you can’t say no to. They are so talented. We get fascinated that how these young kids perform so well.” “I also used to act when I was a kid, but these kids are incomparable. They learn four-five pages dialogues within minutes. They have a stage presence. They fearlessly talk on the camera. After their act gets over, they talk to us directly without being getting nervous,” Omung said. “So the difficult thing is how to mentor them. What plus points we have to take out of them and how we should nurture them so that a huge talent comes out, so that after 15 years we can take them as an actor,” Omung said. The director said, “right now we have shortlisted 16 out of 150 children, and now we will nurture them. They will be given a topic and then we will mentor them that what they are doing wrong, right, where they are lacking behind, what are their plus points, where the act is getting monotonous.” Telling about what talent’s the show has brought to the people, Omung said, “if you will see across the different channels, whichever child artist is performing onscreen are the products of this show ‘India’s Best dramebaz’. This show takes out such characters going through different processes so that they become famous in the future.” When asked what attracted him to this show, Omung said, “I can be the host or it is also better to be a judge. I am directing big actors in the movies. So coming from there, I always had an attraction with the kids.” The ‘Mary Kom’ director said, “I have promised these kids that they will get work in my pictures.” He has hosted very famous show ‘Ek Minute’ on Zee TV during 90s. When asked how he feels coming back to the channel after so many years, Omung said, “This is good. Everyone is coming back to the TV. Whether it is Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan — all of them are coming back to the TV. TV is mass media. Netflix is taking over the world. If you see the foreign actors, all of them are coming to the TV.
TV and phone are the future.” “So, I needed this, because my picture is scheduled to come next year. There is a lot of time in that. So when they approached me, I accepted the offer,” Omung said. “I started my career as a television show host about 25 years ago with Zee TV’s show ‘Just Ek Minute.’ Life has come full circle for me as I am back this time as a judge. I have been an avid follower of the show’s previous seasons and thoroughly enjoyed the innocence and energy with which the kids put forth their talent. I am looking forward to mentoring the fresh batch of acting enthusiasts with my expertise,” Omung added. Omung added that, as a first-time judge, he pays more attention to the spark within the kids than the presented item itself.
“Vivek looks at something else, and so does Sonali. So we have a balance,” he said. With the tag-line, ‘Bacche Funky, Total Nautanki “India’s Best Dramebaaz,” will go on air from June 30 as a weekend show.
