J&K falls in seismic Zone-IV, V

JAMMU, Jan 23: Government today informed that entire Jammu and Kashmir falls in seismic Zone-IV and V and is vulnerable to natural disasters particularly earthquakes.
Responding to the question of PDP MLA Abdul Rahim Rather in the Legislative Assembly, Minister Incharge Disaster Management said, “it is a fact that J&K lies in seismic zone and there remains always an apprehension of threat to life and property”.
“Almost all the districts of Kashmir valley and erstwhile Doda district fall in seismic Zone-V and the rest of the districts of the State fall in seismic Zone-IV”, he said.
About the preparations made to face eventualities, the Minister said that Emergency Operation Centre has been set up in each district headquarters and different groups for rescue, relief and rehabilitation formed at Panchayat, Block, Tehsil and District levels.  “Liaison Officers in order of priority have been identified by all the concerned departments to ensure coordination with the district administration”, he added.
He further informed the House that all the departments have prepared inventory of assets available with them, which can be moved/pressed into service as and when required. “Police Control Rooms are ready to make contacts at different levels besides dissemination of information through wireless network”, the Minister said.
SDRF battalion is being equipped with latest equipments pertaining to search and rescue of trapped persons during earthquakes and floods. Moreover, awareness programmes are also being carried out so that more and more people could be made aware of aims and objectives of civil defence and disaster management, the Minister said.
