India avers its place in the UN

Call it India’s superb diplomatic victory as a result of hard work in winning over the trust and respect from most of the countries or vindicating its position to have its postulating place in the World Body, it is heartening to note that India was elected to the United Nations’ top Human Rights Body on 12th instant by getting 188 votes out of 193. India, over the last few years, has successfully carved a niche for it in world affairs which it rightly deserved. In fact, those countries who are having divergent views about international affairs and areas of disagreement inter-se, are vying with one another to be associated with this country of 130 billion people with a strong and fastest growing economy. That it got the highest number of votes among all the candidates proves the point patently.
India had previously been elected to the Human Rights Council Headquartered at Geneva for two terms of 2011-14 and 2014-17. With this election to one of the prestigious branches of the World Body , India will have a considerable say in dealing with Human rights among 47 members of the Council. Many a time, on account of relying on half baked truths or incorrect inputs , reports on human rights concerns were found to be not congruent with the actual facts which can now have a more realistic and divergent view while formulating periodic reports. Along with India , Bahrain, Bangladesh, Fiji and Philippines had also staked a claim but India’s win was more than certain.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin said that India’s win with the highest number of votes reflects India’s standing in the International comity. The development has yet again reflected that India has gained more friends than lost any, during the last couple of years thanks to our diplomatic dexterity and clear cut stand on various critical issues concerning the comity of nations more so in the present scenario of more stress on mutual cooperation to find ways to benefit from one another’s experience and focus on three dimensions of sustainable development, economic, social and environmental. These are otherwise the commitments of the UN’s Economic and Social Council which held elections to a number of its subsidiary bodies on Oct 12.
Not only this, India also got elected to the Commission on Population and Development for a term beginning from April16, 2018 for a term of three years say up to 2021. The Commission, among other activities is required to assist the Council by arranging for studies and advising the Council on population issues and trends, integrating population and developmental strategies. Population and related developmental policies and programmes are its other activities. Like this, not only shall India be offering its experiences and opinions on the subject but playing a key role in formulating policies and programmes. India was among 17 members elected by acclamation to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. This Commission, it is noteworthy, acts as the principal policymaking body to the UN in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The Committee members have to serve a three year term starting from January 2019. With election to host of Committees of the World Body as a member, India has gained and garnered increasing support from member countries which could in the near future, establish its long genuine claim to the permanent seat on the UN Security Council as a member of the G4 – an organisation comprising Brazil, Germany , Japan and India.
