Heavy rains, snow predicted

Srinagar, Feb 28: The Meteorological Department today forecast heavy rains and snow across the State for next three days which may affect the air traffic and surface traffic.
“A fresh Western Disturbance is affecting the Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas and most likely to affect the State from 01-03-2018 (March 1) morning to 03-03-2018 (Forenoon) (March 3),” an official of the Meteorological department (MeT) said.
Under the influence of this system, moderate rain and snow is expected at widespread places of Jammu, Kashmir and moderate snowfall in Ladakh, mainly in Kargil district.
Higher reaches of Kashmir and Jammu are most likely to receive moderate to heavy rain and snow. Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama and Budgam districts will most likely receive heavy rain and snow.
The official said that inclement weather may lead to disruption of surface transportation mainly National Highway.
In the meantime, authorities today sent rescue teams to the Lashkote forests in Lolab area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district where three persons were buried in an avalanche on Saturday.
The teams were sent after the families of the missing persons yesterday urged the authorities to trace out the missing persons. A team of rescuers comprising of police, army and SDRF had started rescue operations on Sunday but returned due to lack of expertise.
Five persons had gone to the area for hunting. As the avalanche struck, the two among them had a miraculous escape.
Those buried in the snow were identified as Altaf Ahmad Mir son of Bashir Ahmad Mir, Bashir Ahmad Ganie son of Ghulam Rasool Ganie and Ghulam Mohd Lone son of Ali Mohd Lone all residents of Warnow, Lolab.
