Srinagar, Nov 7: On one hand the State Government has launched a massive campaign for “Beti Bachao, Beti Padao” but on the other hand a recently constructed Girls Hostel meant for girls of far flung areas of Jammu has been handed over to Mission Director Jammu and Kashmir State Skill Development Mission.
The hostel building was temporarily allotted to Directorate till proper arrangement is made for its office but the Mission Director, Peer Ghulam Nabi, in violation to rules renovated the whole building by spending around Rs 15 lakh.
The hostel building funded by Government of India and situated at polytechnic premises, Bikram Chowk Jammu was constructed recently at the cost of Rs 2.5 crore. The GoI funded project was meant for the girls hostel and not for the Mission Directorate. The renovations were done without any budget allocation and without fulfilling necessary codal formalities.
A senior official of the Technical Education Department said that there was no need to renovate the building as it was yet to be utilized by the girl students undergoing training in Women Polytechnic Jammu. The renovation process of the building is still in progress which includes paneling and demolition of walls.
The officials said that girls from far flung areas of Jammu province who are mostly from downtrodden section of the society are facing difficulty at rented accommodations in absence of hostel facility and they were desperately waiting for the hostel building.
A girl student said that they will take up the matter with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who being a woman can understand their problem. She said that Government is spending lakhs of rupees on Beti Bachao Beti Padao campaign but on the ground hostel meant for Betis has been handed over to the Mission Directorate.
