GMC holds CME on trauma management

JAMMU, Nov 30: In view of heavy burden of trauma in the State, specially in Jammu region, PG Department of Surgery , GMC Jammu  today organised a one day CME on ” Modern Trends in Management of Trauma”  under the aegis of the Jammu & Kashmir State Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India.
Dr Tariq Parvez Azad, Professor of Surgery was Organising Secretary of the CME.
Prof MC Misra, Director All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi, who is a national authority on Trauma, inaugurated the CME.
Prof H L Goswami, ex-Principal GMC Jammu & former member J&K State Public Service Commission was guest of honour.
Around 150 delegates along with faculty, Post Graduates and students of GMC Jammu, ASCOMS Jammu, GMC Srinagar,  SKIMS Srinagar and GMC Chandigarh  participated in the CME.
Prof M C Misra delivered  ” Late Dr. Sourabh Gupta Memorial Lecture”
In his key note address Prof Misra deliberated  on  “Planning of a Trauma Centre” which was in tune with the efforts of the State Government to start a separate Trauma Centre in Jammu.
Other guest speakers included Dr Kapil Dev Soni- a critical care specialist  from JPN National Trauma Centre, AIIMS New Delhi; Prof. Altaf Umar Ramzan – HoD Neuro-surgery, SKIMS Srinagar; Prof Rakesh Saraf, former HOD Surgery GMC Jammu; Prof. Gurjit Singh – former HoD CVTS Department GMC Jammu; Dr. Iqbal Saleem Wani – Assistant Professor Surgery GMC Srinagar and Dr. Sanjay Bhasin – Assistant Professor Surgery GMC Jammu.
During the proceedings it was highlighted that trauma constituted 8 per cent of deaths and 12 per cent of disease burden worldwide. Trauma is more prevalent in developing countries and more common in low income population.
The incidence of trauma is decreasing in developed countries, where highest standards of safety are maintained.  In India around 20 lakh people suffer from trauma every year, of which around 5 – 10 lakh people succumb to it.
In GMC Jammu as per the audit report of General Surgery Department almost 6000 cases of trauma are admitted every year.
