Former J&K Guv and SC Judge V Khalid dies at 95

Kannur: Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor and Supreme Court Judge Vazhakkulangarayil Khalid, popularly known as V Khalid passed away in a private hospital, here, due to age related illness, on Wednesday afternoon around 1300 hrs.

He was 95, and survived by wife Rabiya and daughter Tahira. The funeral will be held at Kannur City Juma Masjid in the evening. He served as a Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for just 12 days in 1984. He served as Supreme Court Judge from 1984 to 1987.

He was born on July 1, 1922 to CC Marakkar and Zainaba family as the fourth child.  He studied in Municipal High School, Kannur and did intermediate at Government Brennen College, Thalassery and graduate from Presidency college in Madras and took LLB from Madras Law College.

He started his career as an Advocate from Kannur Munsiff court in 1948. After the practice in Thalassery bar council since 1949 to 1964, he moved to the Kerala High Court. He served as a High Court judge from April 3, 1972 to 1983.

He also served as the Chairman of the Prime Minister foundation from its inception in 1988 to 2008.

His judgement in Shah Bano case made him popular, when he stated the divorced Muslim woman has right over the property of her ex-husband. (Agencies)
