Energy resources

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is mounting attention on new sources of energy to supplement the energy store of the nation. Finally, a policy matter of using solar and other renewable energy has been drafted and circulated among the States. We highly appreciate this step and we are reminded that at one point of time we were told that Ladakh was most appropriate for harnessing solar energy owing to plenty of clear sunshine round most of the time in the year. But what happed to those tall claims is not known. An estimated potential of 897 GW has been identified from various renewable energy sources in the country which includes 749 GW from solar, 103 GW from wind, 25 GW from bio-energy and 20 GW from small hydro power. If this is attained, it will make a great difference to energy needs in our country.
