NAGPUR, July 27: In his inaugural address as chief guest at the two-day Annual Conference of “Diabetes in Pregnancy” (DIPSI 2014) here today, Dr.Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (MoS), Science and Technology & Earth Sciences (Independent Charge), MoS in Prime Minister’s Office, Atomic Energy, Space and Department of Personnel & Training said that the next few years will focus on prevention of Diabetes in pregnant women with the objective of ensuring that the child of a diabetic mother is able to grow in its mother’s womb without ever realizing that the mother has diabetes.
“If we succeed in achieving this objective, it will be a major breakthrough because it will help in breaking the cycle of generation to generation transmission of diabetes”, he observed.
In his capacity as Minister of Science and Technology, Dr.Jitendra Singh said that in the years to come, he would invite young diabetologists to come forward with their projects which can be supported and coordinated under various schemes of Government of India.
Dr.Jitendra Singh said that in the next few years, the emphasis of research in diabetes will be on diabetes in women, particularly pregnant women and he appreciated the efforts of Prof Dr V.Seshiah, fatherly figure in the field of diabetes, under whose guidance the DIPSI has produced guidelines for treatment of diabetes in pregnancy which are now accepted worldwide and hailed by the WHO. Because of Dr Seshiah, he said, India can today claim to be the world leader in the field of “diabetes in pregnancy”.
Earlier while introducing Dr Jitendra Singh, internationally known Diabetologtist and President Association Of Physicians of India (API) Dr Shashank Joshi said, it is a matter of great pride for the entire diabetology fraternity that one of them has been entrusted with such important and prestigious responsibility in the Union Ministry.
Prominent among others who spoke on the occasion were Dr.Samar Banerjee, President RSSDI, Dr.Sunil Gupta and Dr.Vishwas Varma.
