Defaulter on HSRPs

High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) for all vehicles is a strategy adopted by the State Transport Authority. Ordinary number plates have to be replaced by HSRP. That is the order all vehicle owners have to obey. It became necessary for the transport authorities to ensure that miscreants are denied the chance of hijacking a vehicle and replacing its plate by a fictitious plate in order to execute an act of subversion or crime but escape arrest. There are many agencies that are issuing plates without the permission of the transport authorities and it is illegal.
Transport authorities have taken a serious not of agencies illegally issuing plates to the vehicle owners. They have to close down their shops with immediate effect as per the order of the police authorities. Actually, the problem is with the vehicle owners who are defying the law and not changing the plates with HSRPs. It is their duty to do so and not fall prey to something that is illegal.
When there is an order, and the order is in the interests of the public, it has to be followed in letter and in spirit. The authorities have suggested that in the case of offenders the plates could be removed physically by the traffic police and they can go a step further of taking punitive action against them. A fine could be imposed on them.
We appreciate the earnestness of the Traffic Department to vigorously follow the campaign of replacing the plates. That is one good security measure. However, we also expect the traffic police and authorities to be as much earnest in implementing other traffic rules with vigour.
