DB seeks details of Disaster Mgmt Plan

JAMMU, Apr 14: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Kirpal Chand stressing the need to review the preparedness of the State to meet any eventuality in case of any earthquake, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice Baddar Durez  Ahmed and Justice Alok Aradhe has issued certain directions to State as well as Union of India.
After hearing Advocate Munish Sharma appearing for the PIL whereas Advocate General Jehangir Iqbal Ganai for the State and ASGI Sindu Sharma for the Union of India, the DB observed, “this is an important issue pertaining to the likelihood of a major earthquake hitting the entire  Jammu and Kashmir, which falls under either Seismic Zone-IV or V”, adding “it is, therefore, imperative for the State to be prepared to deal with situation”.
DB directed the State to file response mentioning whether any Disaster Management Plan has been prepared and if so the details of the same shall be furnished. Moreover, the State was directed to apprise the court about compliance to National Building Code for Seismic Zones IV and V. Even the Union of India was directed to furnish a copy of the National Building Code.
