Breaking News:

Court takes serious note of contemptuous tweets

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar Jan 28: Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar Massarat Shaheen today took serious note of contemptuous tweets posted by social activist Madhu Kishwar in response to the warrants issued by the court.
Hearing a criminal defamation case filed by senior journalist and Editor-in-Chief Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari, the CJM said “it is contempt of court” when her attention was drawn towards a Tweet posted on December 29 and wrote “neither first illegal warrant nor 2nd illegal warrant issued by CJM Srinagar in case filed against me by @bukharishujaat reached me thus far”. The councsel for Kishwar pleaded ignorance and apologised and also told the court “how do we know she has posted it”. However, the counsel for complainant insisted that it was her account on which she had posted her initial defamatory and malicious Tweets against the complainant.
In the main case, however, the court granted exemption for today’s hearing and the counsels for the complainant Advocates Faisal Qadri and Vaseem Aslam sought time for filing objections with regard to her permanent exemption as sought by the counsel. The court fixed February 16 as next date of hearing.
The main complaint was filed by Bukhari seeking criminal proceedings under Sections 499 and 500 for defaming the complainant through her Tweets in July 2016 and afresh on December 2, 2016. She had leveled unfounded and malicious allegations against Bukhari.
In her tweets, Kishwar had alleged that his newspaper has received funding from agencies and was playing ISI script and spitting venom against India.  In response to a legal notice issued in August, Kishwar had sought compromise to amicably resolve the issue but she again resorted to hateful campaign tarnishing his image.
The court had issued bailable warrants against her on December 4 and later on it was re-issued on December 26 when the accussed failed to appear in the court.
