Conservation of water

Sir,
India is a big  country having  geographically and climatically different regions. While one region of our country is experiencing torrential rains and heavy snow, the other is battling acute shortage of water at the same time. Many regions of our country are now  in the grip of severe drought or drought like  conditions. There are big expanse of acres of parched land in drought affected Bundelkhand and other regions thirsting for water.A large number of wells, ponds, handpumps have gone dry and ground water level has gone down in the affected regions.Television Channels show long queues of people gathered at the sources of water or water tankers struggling to get drinking water. In some areas the problem has assumed such a  dimension that  prohibitory orders have been imposed near sources of water. As a result of drought, crops have  suffered extensive damage and many people have left  drought affected villages to seek work elsewhere.Lakhs of litres of water  has  so far been carried to Latur in train to provide water to the affected people.
Water is the elixir of life. It is at such  tough times that the real importance of water is realized.Perhaps our ancestors were well aware of the importance of water.
That is why the water bodies such as rivers, lakes etc were worshipped and it was considered a pious act to run ‘shabeels’ to provide water to the thirsty people or passangers. They would also put water in pots on the roofs for the  birds to drink. We need to carry on their legacy and ensure that  every drop of water is conserved and wisely used. There is need to save water by rain harvesting and use of water efficient appliances .We also need to conserve drinking water by avoiding wastage of drinking water on washing ,bathing, watering plants, washing vehicles, watering golf courses, etc.We ought  not to let water go waste by letting the taps open.
Yours etc..
