JAMMU, Dec 26: The former Union Minister, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has sought a through scrutiny of the prevailing “mess in the supplies of rations” and suggested for adopting the system under which the consumers are supplied different kinds of eatables to each family in one go on a fixed date of the month.
In a detailed letter to the State Governor, Prof. Gupta has pointed out how the former,   in his Address to the Joint session of both the Houses of the State Legislature on the eve of last Budget Session, had lauded the enforcement of National Food Security Act in the State and stated that adoption of this system would benefit the less advantage segment of the society, who would get rice at the rate of Rs 3/- and wheat/atta at the rate of Rs 2/- per Kg. “However, even after expiry of more than a year, the rationees have not been provided the ration cards and one does not know that in which category he has been listed. In the absence of Ration Cards even poor people are being supplied wheat/atta at the rate of Rs 13/- and rice Rs 15/- per Kg,” Prof Gupta explained.
Prof. Gupta also said that contrary to the promised five fold increase in the number of less advantaged segment of society,  the lists prepared of the rationees are not only full of flaws and anomalies but also several poor have been brought in the category of APL and listed as Non-Priority House Hold (NPHH). “And some of such families have been even put in the category of exclusive and thus, deprived to get any ration. But there are some APL families who have been listed in the category of (PHH),” he added and also referred about the irregular supply of sugar and curtailment in its scale from 700 grams to 500 grams per soul per month.
Prof Gupta said that the matter was being brought to kind notice of the Governor to have a look on the gravity of the problem which has been created by a total mess like situation in the supplies of rations. “While looking into the whole malady, the ration supply system in the adjoining State of Himachal may be taken in view where the rations to each family are supplied in one go on a fixed date of the month, ” he added.
