JAMMU, Feb 19: The 642nd birth anniversary of Guru Ravi Dass Ji was celebrated here today with fervour and devotees thronged the temples of Guru Ji across Jammu region to pay obeisance.
Meanwhile, different political, social, religious and other organisations remembered Guru Ji for his teachings of love and unity.
National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah while paying tributes to Guru Ravi Dass Ji on his birth anniversary at a function here called for imbibing the spirit of love, compassion, peace and harmony as professed by every religion and preached by great saints and seers throughout their lives.
He also greeted the people on Guru Ravi Dass Jayanti and stressed on maintaining unity and strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and said that this will be the greatest tribute to great saints, who strived for a just society, based on social justice and equality.
NC Provincial President, Devender Singh Rana; Additional General Secretary, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal; Surjeet Singh Slathia, Abdul Gani Malik, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, Rattan Lal Gupta, Ajaz Jan, Vijay Laxmi Dutta, Vijay Lochan and Abdul Gani Teli were also present on the occasion.
At the main function to celebrate 642nd Jayanti of Guru Ravi Dass Ji in Guru Ravi Dass Sabha, Krishna Nagar; former Minister and senior Congress leader, Raman Bhalla, Mayor JMC Chander Mohan Gupta, Raj Kumar and other Wards Committee Members paid obeisance.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhalla said that that true, selfless service to the mankind without any personal, material or vested interest is a service to God.
Bhalla while paying rich tributes to Guru Ravi Dass Ji said that Guru Ji was an epitome of societal reforms and humanity. He said Guru Ji worked tirelessly to create a world where all are equal and where love is the only bond of relationship between different human beings.
Dwelling upon the life and teachings of Guru Ji, JMC Mayor recalled his eventful life and said he emerged as a beacon light at a time when the society was engulfed by darkness.
Guru Ravi Dass Sabha President, Piran Ditta called for imbibing the spirit of selflessness and righteousness as preached by saints and sages from times immemorial, saying camaraderie and fellow feelings are imperative for the harmonious growth of society.
At the same function in Guru Ravi Das Sabha, former Minister, Sat Sharma along with Corporator Ward no. 12, Jeet Angral and locals of the area sought blessings of Guru Ji.
Speaking on the occasion, Sat Sharma said that Guru Ravi Dass Ji throughout his life worked for the upliftment of poor and weaker sections of the society. He described Guru Ravi Dass Ji as a great social reformer who tirelessly worked to improve the lives of downtrodden and under-privileged sections of the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Corporator, Jeet Angral asked the people to follow the teachings of Guru Ji.
Surjit Singh Chib, Varinder Dogra, Romesh Thakyal, Anil Angral, Harbans Lal, Kuldeep Kumar, Bunty Kumar, Satvinder Singh, Chintu, Chandan Singh Chib and others were also present on the occasion.
Birth anniversary of Guru Ravi Dass Ji was also celebrated at Gurudwara Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, Omara Morh in Udhampur where many devotees paid obeisance.
Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Rajpura Mangotrian has been organising a Prabhat Pheri for the last 10 days to celebrate Ravi Dass Jayanti. Today was the last day of the Prabhat Pheri which started from Rajpura Temple of Guru Ravi Dass Ji and after passing through different areas culminated at the same temple. A large number of devotees were present in the procession singing devotional songs in the praise of Guru Ji.
