Another tragic road accident has taken place on the fatal highway in which six persons lost their lives and 12 other got injured some seriously. A mini bus was carrying a marriage party skid off the road near village Sarori of Garrian-Dhanas around 12 kms from Chenani in district Udhampur. It turned into great disaster. The mini bus rolled down the deep gorge when it was complete dark. SHO Chenani, on receiving information, forthwith reached the accident site and started rescue operation in which the local rendered tremendous help. Because of darkness rescue operations took a long time about two hours when fie bodies were retrieved and the six injured expired during transhipment. The injured have been admitted to Chenani hospital or shifted to Udhampur District Hospital.
The police are investigating the accident and so far the cause of accident is not known. The tragedy has struck and the invisible hand of death has snatched precious lives from us. We join the mourners in expressing our condolence to the bereaved families. However, we would like that the police conducts an inquiry into the cause sofa the accident and ascertain where things went wrong so that it could serve a guideline for future precaution. We cannot speculate anything and must wait for the police inquiry report. Nevertheless, we would impress upon the concerned police and traffic authorities to conduct the investigation expeditiously and convince the families of the deceased that the calamity ha befallen them for no human fault. Traffic police, too, has to conduct a probe and ensure that the vehicle was in good conditions to be roadworthy and that the driver of the vehicle was holding a genuine driving licence. There are other aspects of the case that the traffic police needs to investigate. The next of kin of the deceased should be given ex-gratia relief and the injured should also be provided succour as per rules but at the earliest enabling them to go for the best medical treatment available.
