Amritsar train tragedy

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ’61 killed, 72 injured as train runs over Dussehra revellers’ DE Oct 20, 2018.
This horrific accident which occured on the occasion of Dussehra has brought forth certain realities which need to be taken into account.
The first and foremost is the role of administration and organisers. Both these parties have been blamed for not making proper arrangements for such an occasion. Despite presence of police personnel no safey measures had been taken to warn the revellers not to go near tracks or to leave the tracks before arrival of the trains. The public is to be blamed for not abiding the rules of the road or adhering to the norms laid by the administration.
In India, it has been observed that people care too hoots for public property or maintain decorum during religious or social functions. The ‘Chalta hai attitude’ prevails everywhere. Recently in Jammu Local Body Elections, the contesting candidates defaced all city walls with posters and buntings. Even parks were not spared. Wherever rallies were held people littered the ground, roads and other public places with empty water bottles, and other eatable items. It did not occur them to keep the place clean once function was over. Unless people understand this reality, Amritsar train tragedy incidents will continue to occur.
