Expressing his concern over frequent disruptions in Parliamentary proceedings, outgoing President Pranab Mukherjee had some words of advice for the Government as well as the opposition, when he said. “During my years in Parliament, I learnt that it stands for debate, discussion and dissent. I also learnt that disruptions hurt the opposition more.”
Whether the parliamentarians heed to advice or not, one thing is pretty clear that frequent disruptions by legislators has hit the prestige of Parliament beyond repair. With the result, people have started disliking the proceedings. Disruption for the sake of disruptions means not only wasting tax payers’ money but also precious time of this country.
If legislations pertaining vital issues are not debated, discussed, and passed well in time, it surely means diservice to the nation. It is incumbent upon legislators to plead the cause of people they represent. There are many important issues facing the nation today, and these should not get lost in the din created by sloganeering, shouting and yelling by legislators.
Constant disruptions should be avoided by legislators in the interest of the country.
