Academy’s first women artists’ workshop takes-off at Jammu

JAMMU, Dec 21: For the first time since its inception, Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture & Languages today organized all-women artists’ workshop scheduled to run for five days. The participating artists are young and budding women painters drawn from different parts of the State.
The workshop was inaugurated by Secretary Academy, Khalid Bashir Ahmad, even as Prof. Rita Jitendra presided over the inaugural session. Among others, noted author and artists, N. D. Jamwal and Secretary J&K Red Cross, Roma Wani, were present.
Dr. Lalit Gupta, resource person, presented a paper on the works and contribution of women artists of Jammu & Kashmir with special reference to the national scenario. Sunanda Khajuria, Delhi based free lance artist whose works deal with human psychology, would conduct the workshop.
Speaking on the occasion, Khalid Bashir Ahmad said that the idea to hold an exclusive workshop for female artists was to provide them a platform to interact with each other and with experts and discuss the emerging trends in fine art. He said the workshop would help participating young artists to hone their talent in the light of the interaction with experts and the experience they would gain here. He said ten young women artists are attending the workshop and hoped that it would serve as a prelude to similar activities by the Academy in future.
In her presidential address, Prof. Rita Jitendra hailed the Academy’s initiative to hold an event exclusively devoted to women. She asked participating artists to make painting their passion and not let their domestic responsibilities dampen or hamper their interest in the pursuit of their hobby.
The participating artists introduced themselves to the audience and briefly spoke about their area of work.
The workshop will, among other things, feature interactive sessions, lectures, slide shows of works by individual participants, engaging in creative work, discussions on contemporary trends in art, interaction with students of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar and Parade and visit by faculty of Institute of Music & Fine Art.
The participating artists include besides Sunanda Khajuria, Subina Gul, Shahana Parveen, Siresh, Shakti Kumari, Anuradha Devi, Nusrat Zahoor Shah, Renu Bala and Jitendra Kour.
