JAMMU, Mar 29: Fed up with the torture by in-laws for not brining dowry as per their expectations, a 28-year-old woman living with her in-laws at Sarwal allegedly committed suicide by jumping into river Chenab in tehsil Akhnoor.
As per police sources, a woman identified as Neha Katal (28), wife of Arjun Katal, a resident of Sarwal allegedly committed suicide by jumping into river Chenab in tehsil Akhnoor.
Passerby noticed the body floating in river Chenab today morning and informed the police about the matter.
On getting information, police team rushed to the spot and shifted the dead body of the woman to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where after conducting autopsy, the body was handed over to legal heirs for last rites.
As the news of the suicide reached to the ears of woman’s parents, the latter along with other relatives reached GMCH and held protest against deceased’s husband and in-laws demanding their immediate arrest.
Family members of the deceased said that the couple had been married few years back and had a one and half year old son. The deceased allegedly took her life, as she could not endure the harassment she was subjected to by her husband and in-laws.  She was allegedly being harassed for dowry, they added.
“Arjun was embroiled in a heated argument with Neha, who repeatedly taunted her and pressed her to obtain money from her family. Last evening, another altercation took place between the couple, triggering off her suicidal instinct. It was then that she took the fatal plunge”, the protestors stated.
“Neha had been facing harassment from her in-laws and husband. She was ill-treated earlier as well, but the intensity had escalated and she committed suicide. She would often call us up to report the abuse she faced”, the family members alleged.
