JAMMU, Mar 30: Unison Cultural Troupe under the aegis of Ministry of Culture and J&K Academy of Art Culture and Language staged a Hindustani play to commemorate the birth anniversary of legend ghazal singer Begum Akhtar at auditorium of Government College for Women (GCW), Parade.
In this play, Manpreet Kour, eminent educationist made debut in the field of acting by giving sizzling performance.
On the occasion, Anjali Sharma, Director Doordarshan Kendra, Jammu was the chief guest.
Dr Sudhir Mahajan from J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages presented the welcome address.
The play was written and directed by eminent and senior theaterist Vijay Malla.
The play was based on the life of legend ghazal singer Begum Akhter including her childhood, her teachings, her miseries and isolation. The play revealed certain facts connected to the life of Begum Akhtar including her life’s beginning as singer with support of her mother and uncle, her film carrier and finally her marriage to Barrister Istihak Khan.
On the occasion, famous gazals of Begum Akhter were sung by artists, which left the audience spell bound.
The actors including Manpreet Kour, who made debut in the field of acting, gave their best performance while performing different characters.
In the play, Meenal Peer acted as Begum Akhtar, the role of Appa was ably performed by Manpreet Kour, Vijay Malla acted as Suturdhar Chacha, Arun Singh as Ashghar Hussain, Mohit Rawal as Ishtiak Abbassi, Laksh Bali as messanger, Nazuk Bhagat as young Begum Akhtar and Anuroop Pathania, Quarat-ul-Din and Mohit Rawal as members.
The assistant director of the play was Anuroop Pathania, costumes were designed by Manpreet Kour, make-up by Shiv Dev Singh, production assistance by Romesh Chander, music by Ravi Bhan and play back singing by Monika, lights and sounds by Pankaj Sharma.
