Sukhnandan visits flood affected areas

SRINAGAR, June 29: Minister for Public Health Engineering, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sukhnandan Kumar Choudhary today conducted extensive tour of flood-affected areas of district Kulgam and took stock of the damages caused due to recent flashfloods in river Vaishow.
MLA, Kulgam M.Y Tarigami besides a team of senior officers of Irrigation and Flood Control Department accompanied the Minister.
The Minister visited Brazloo, Asthal, Adpora, Chambgund, Mirhama and Nehama villages where the last week floods damaged public properties, water supply schemes, irrigation facilities, embankments of the river and paddy and vegetable lands.
The Minister directed the Chief Engineer I&FC, Javed Jaffar to take up the flood protection work at most vulnerable sites by prioritizing the projects. He instructed him to prepare a comprehensive flood management project for nallah Vaishow urgently and submit it to the Central Water Commission (CWC).
Mr. Sukhnandan directed the concerned authorities to speed up the pace of restoration and repair works and complete these within shortest possible time so that people do not face any problem for want of basic amenities. He also asked them to be at the beck and call of the public who have high expectations from them.
Interacting with the people at various locations, the Minister assured them that the Government will vigorously pursue the matter of arranging funds for comprehensive flood management project for nallah Vaishow for early approval so that the recurrent threat of the floods are effectively managed.
The Minister also visited Palpora, Lassipora and Ganjipora in Devsar constituency and inspected the damages caused by September-2014 floods in the area. MLA, Devsar Mohammad Amin Bhat accompanied the Minister.
The Minister directed the Chief Engineer to take up the permanent protection works immediately on the spots where the nallah Vaishow breached last year and caused devastation in a vast area.
