Speaking at a meeting in Samba, the Minister for Industries and Commerce, has called for promotion of Ayurveda based industry in J&K in view of ever-increasing demand for natural remedies and products. He believes Samba district has a strong potential for producing Ayurvedic medicines and cures for many diseases.
Ayurveda is the ancient medical science practiced by our ancient generations for millennia after millennia. Originally, Ayurveda, literally meaning the knowledge of age of life, has been the theme of one of the four Vedas, namely Atharva Veda. It was from the Atharva Veda that saint Patanjali drew the knowledge of medical science of Indian origin. This science has two components namely physical and spiritual. According to Patanjali, not only the body needed to be cured when unwell, even the mind needs to be kept fit and trim and thus a balance has to be created between the physical and spiritual science of human health. In modern medicine there is the psychiatry as part of medical education. This too has been drawn from the theories given by our ancient sages especially Patanjali and others.
The Minister for Commerce is very right in saying that we must give special attention to the promotion of Ayurveda in our State. Not only Samba, we have a large forest area in the State where herbs and plants grow that have medicinal qualities and this would be a matter for further research in the field.
