Power station, 3 vehicles damaged in fire

JAMMU, May 24: In a major fire accident, a power station and three vehicles were damaged near Shaheedi Chowk area, here.
As per police sources, fire broke out in a 500 KV transformer at Shaheedi Chowk in the power station, which later spread to the adjoining two 500 KV transformers. The intensity of the fire was so severe that, three vehicles including two cars and auto rickshaw parked nearby the incident also caught fire and got damaged.
After getting information, police team rushed to the spot and informed the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
The fire fighters along with tenders rushed to the spot and started operation to douse the flames. After hectic efforts, the fire was brought under control, but till then the power station and three vehicles were damaged in the inferno. Four fire tenders along with fire fighters were pressed to douse the flames.
No injury or casualty has been reported in the incident, while the exact loss could not be ascertained yet.
Concerned police has taken cognizance in this regards.
Meanwhile, MLA Jammu East Rajesh Gupta visited the site of the accident and instructed the PDD staff to restore the power supply in the area within shortest possible time.
“Whatever is requirement for the restoration of the damages would be provided from my CDF”, he said and asked the revenue officials to present the report about the incident immediately.
He said that there is a need to increase the capacity of the transformers so that they can withstand the increased power consumption particularly during the ongoing hot weather conditions.
