JAMMU, Mar 17: To create awareness among the people about breast cancer, the Health Centre, University of Jammu (JU), in association with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH), Kakryal (Katra) organized three-day Mammography Camp (Breast Cancer Screening Camp) at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, JU.
During the camp, a complete comprehensive cancer check up service was provided free of cost to the registered female employees of the University and their relatives. The camp was inaugurated by Prof Satnam Kour, Dean, Students Welfare, University of Jammu.
More than 65 females got themselves registered with the University Health Centre for this screening camp. On the occasion, a mobile breast cancer screening unit van equipped with all the State-of-the-Art screening gadgets and facilities was arranged by SMVDNSH to conduct the screening.
Highlighting the significance of such camps, Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Convenor, Health Advisory Committee, University Health Centre, said that the basic idea to organize such camps is to create an awareness among the women folk about breast cancer and importance of its detection at an early stage for its early diagnosis. “Cancer can be cured if detected and treated at an early stage”, he informed.
“On the first day of the camp, 25 women were screened for breast cancer and the remaining registered females will be screened on 24th and 31st March, 2017”, informed Dr Shabana Azmi, the Medical Officer at the Health Centre.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in most cities of India and 2nd most common in the rural areas.
