Ladakh connectivity

People in the State in general and those in Ladakh region in particular will be glad to know that after many years of unpardonable neglect, Ladakh region’s road connectivity and telecommunication have emerged as two sectors which the Union Ministry of Home Affairs would like to focus on. The Minister of State for Home has said in no ambiguous words that he is not satisfied with the pace with which the Border Roads Organization is working on the building of roads in the region and the quality of work they are rendering. It is good that the authorities have realized the strategic importance of Ladakh region to national security. Actually, this realization should have come soon after the Kargil war of 1999. But anyway even if belated, it is a good development. We know that Ladakh is cold region and we have hardly five or six months during which work on roads can be done. During harsh winter when there is snow on the ground road construction has to be stopped. Thus we have the BRO deployed along Srinagar-Leh sector and also on Himachal-Leh sector. This connectivity network should be brought to completion at an early date so that we are not caught unawares at any given point of time. Secondly, telecommunication system in Ladakh also needs streamlining. The complaint about inadequacy in telecom system was brought before the Prime Minister during his visit to Leh in recent past. It has to be remembered that China has spread a network of roads close to the border in Ladakh. We cannot remain complacent with slow pace of road building or lame communication system. People in Ladakh and Kargil expect lot from the new Government at the Centre and the visit of the Prime Minister and his commitments have sparked great hope among the people of this backward, remote but most strategic area in Northern India.
