SRINAGAR, Sept 30: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry today held an emergency meeting to discuss issuance of notices by Income Tax Department to Kashmiri trading community.
The KCCI took serious note of what they said untimely and un-warranted action by the department at a time when Kashmir valley has been devastated by unprecedented floods claiming hundreds of lives, rendering lakh of people homeless, destroying their business premises, establishments, washing out their records, documents and books of account besides inflicting un-imaginable misery on public at large.
“It is strange that the Income Tax Department whose Srinagar office was itself under about 15 ft water has chosen to operate from Camp Office Jammu for the purpose of issuing notices under Section 143(2) of Income Tax Act to Kashmiri traders”, the KCCI statement said.
“The KCCI condemns the insensitive attitude of the Income Tax Department at a time when the nations across the globe are expressing shock and horror at the destruction caused by the catastrophic floods to the people of Kashmir”, the statement said.
KCCI demanded that the process of issuing notices and other Income Tax related proceedings should be cancelled.
